I became enthusiastic about basketball late in high school. I wanted to play for my high school varsity team, but because of my lack of experience and my 59   stance, I did not make the team. By facing such an obstacle early in my career, I was able to learn from it to build my talents. I began working on my game for 4, sometimes even 5 hours a day, while also focusing on schoolwork. By maintaining my grades, I was able to win a scholarship to Princeton University. I then proceeded to try out for their basketball team, and I made it. My dream took one step closer to becoming reality. Even though I made the Princeton basketball team, my training was far from over. I continued to work endlessly, sometimes long into the night, until I was satisfied with my game. Also, fortunately, I hit a major growth spurt and grew a foot in a matter of 3 years between my junior year in high school and my sophomore year in college. This gave me a lot of confidence when stepping onto the basketball court. During my sophomore year in college, my life changed. Princeton basketball just barely qualified for the NCAA March Madness tournament. The best collegian players in the country play in this tournament, and scouts from NBA teams come to watch some games. If I wanted to make it to the NBA, this tournament would be the only chance I had to prove myself to the scouts. However, it was not easy. Two of the top collegian prospects, Michael Jordan III and LeBron James Jr. , were in the same grade as me. I would have to outshine the both of them, something that would be almost impossible for a guy who did not start playing basketball until high school. My training paid off during March Madness. I dominated in nearly every game averaging 42. 2 points per game, 19. 7 rebounds per game, and 11. 0 assists per game. For the first time ever, Princeton won March Madness, which gave me national recognition. Suddenly, every NBA team wanted to draft the 69   forward from Holmdel, New Jersey. The History and Archaeology of Chauvet Cave Chauvet Cave (also known as  Chauvet-Pont dArc) is currently the oldest known rock art site in the world, apparently dating to the Aurignacian period in France, about 30,000-32,000 years ago. The cave is located in the Pont-dArc Valley of Ardà ¨che, France, at the entrance of the Ardà ¨che gorges between the Cevennes and Rhone valleys. It extends horizontally for nearly 500 meters (~1,650 feet) into the earth and consists of two main rooms separated by a narrow hallway. Paintings at Chauvet Cave Over 420 paintings have been documented in the cave, including numerous realistic animals (reindeer, horses, aurochs, rhinoceros, bison, lions, cave bears among others), human handprints, and abstract dot paintings. The paintings in the front hall are primarily red, created with the liberal applications of red ochre, while the ones in the back hall are mainly black designs, drawn with charcoal. The paintings at Chauvet are highly realistic, which is unusual for this period in Paleolithic rock art. In one famous panel (a little bit is shown above) an entire pride of lions is illustrated, and the feeling of movement and power of the animals is tangible even in photographs of the cave taken in poor light and at low resolution. Archaeological Investigation The preservation in the cave is remarkable. Archaeological material in Chauvet caves deposits include thousands of animal bones, including the bones of at least 190 cave bears (Ursus spelaeus). The remains of hearths, an ivory spearhead, and a human footprint have all been identified within the caves deposits. Chauvet Cave was discovered in 1994 by Jean-Marie Chauvet; the relatively recent discovery of this remarkably intact cave painting site has allowed researchers to closely control the excavations using modern methods. In addition, the researchers have worked to protect the site and its contents. Since 1996, the site has been under investigation by an international team led by Jean Clottes, combining geology, hydrology, paleontology, and conservation studies; and, since that time, it has been closed to the public, to preserve its fragile beauty. Dating Chauvet The dating of Chauvet cave is based on 46 AMS radiocarbon dates taken on tiny pieces of paint from the walls, conventional radiocarbon dates on human and animal bone, and Uranium/Thorium dates on speleotherms (stalagmites). The deep age of the paintings and their realism has led in some circles to a scholarly revision of the notion of paleolithic cave art styles: since radiocarbon dates are a more recent technology than the bulk of cave art studies, codified cave art styles are based on stylistic changes. Using this measure, Chauvets art is closer to Solutrean or Magdalenian in age, at least 10,000 years later than the dates suggest. Paul Pettitt has questioned the dates, arguing that the radiocarbon dates within the cave are earlier than the paintings themselves, which he believes are Gravettian in style and date to no earlier than about 27,000 years ago. Additional radiocarbon dating of the cave bear population continues to support the original date of the cave: the bone dates all fall between 37,000 and 29,000 years old. Further, samples from a nearby cave support the idea that cave bears may have been extinct in the region by 29,000 years ago. That would mean that the paintings, which include cave bears, must be at least 29,000 years old. One possible explanation for the stylistic sophistication of Chauvets paintings is that perhaps there was another entrance to the cave, that allowed later artists access to the cave walls. A study of the geomorphology of the cave vicinity published in 2012 (Sadier and colleagues 2012), argues that the cliff overhanging the cave collapsed repeatedly beginning 29,000 years ago, and sealed the only entrance at least 21,000 years ago. No other cave access point has ever been identified, and given the morphology of the cave, none is likely to be found. These findings do not resolve the Aurignacian/Gravettian debate, although even at 21,000 years of age, Chauvet cave remains the oldest known cave painting site. Service marketing requires not only external marketing but also internal and interactive marketing. External marketing describes the normal work to prepare, price, distribute and promote the service to the customer. Internal Marketing describes the work to train and motivate employees to serve customer. Interactive marketing describes the employees skills in serving the client. Client judges service not only by technical quality but also by its functional quality, therefore service providers must deliver high touch as well as High tech. Managing Service Differentiation In these days of intense price competition, service marketers often complain about the difficulty of differentiating their services from those of competitors. If customers view the services of different providers as similar, they care less about the provider than the price. The solution to price competition is to develop a differentiated offer, delivery and image. The offer can include innovative features that set one companys offer apart from their competitors offers. What the customer expects is called primary service package; the provider can add secondary service features. E.g. airlines have introduced innovation such as advance seating, sleeping compartment, hot showers to differentiate their offers. The major challenge is that most service offerings and innovations are easily copied. However, the company that regularly introduces innovations will gain a succession of temporary advantages over competitors. Service companies can differentiate itself by designing a better and faster delivery system. There are three levels of differentiation. The first is reliability: Some suppliers are more reliable in their on-time delivery, order completeness and order cycle time. Second is resilience: some suppliers are better at handling emergencies, product recalls and answering inquiries. The third is innovativeness; some suppliers create better information systems, introduce bar coding and mixed pallets and in other ways to help the customer. An example is banking system, a bank might offer its customers electronic home banking as a better way to deliver banking services thank having to drive, park and wait in line. Service companies can work on differentiating their images through symbols and branding. E.g. Merill Lynchs bill. Managing Service Quality One of the ways that a service firm can differentiate itself is by delivering consistently higher quality than its competitors do and meets or exceed customer expectations. Customers form service expectations from past experiences, word of mouth and advertising. Customers compare the perceived service with expected service. If the perceived service falls below the expected service, customers are disappointed. If the perceived service e meets or exceeds their expectations, they are apt to use the provider again. Service provider need to identify the expectations of target customers concerning service qualities. Although greater service quality results in greater customer satisfaction, it also results in high costs. Still, investments in service usually pay off through increased customer retention and sales. 5 determinants of service quality: 1. Reliability The ability to perform the promised service dependably and accurately. 2. Responsiveness The willingness to help customers and to provide prompt service 3. Assurance The knowledge and courtesy of employees and their ability to convey trust and confidence 4. Empathy The provision of caring, individualized attention to the customer. 5. Tangibles The appearance of physical facilities, equipment, personnel and communication materials. Even though the companies have invested heavily to develop streamlined and  efficient service-delivery systems, problems will inevitably occur. However, even though the company cannot always prevent service problems, it can learn to recover from them and good service recovery can turn angry customers into loyal ones. In fact, good recovery can win more customers purchasing and loyal than if things had gone well in the first place. Therefore, companies should take steps not only to provide good service every time but also to recover from service mistakes when they do occur. The first step is to empower front-line service employees where authority, responsibility and incentives are given to the employees that they need to recognize, care about and tend to customer needs. Studies of well-managed service companies show that they share a number of common virtues regarding service quality. First they are customer obsessed. They have a distinctive strategy for satisfying customer needs that wins enduring customer loyalty. Second, they have top management commitment to quality. Management such as Ritz-Carlton looks not only at financial performance but also at service performance. Third, the best service providers set high service quality standards. They dont settle for good service, they aim at 100% defect-free service. Forth, the top service firms watch service performance closely. Both their own and competitors. They use methods such as comparison-shopping, complaints from and etc. Fifth, the service companies replaced person-to-person service interactions to self-service technologies, e.g. self-pumping at gas stations. Even though not all self-service technologies improve service quality, they have the potential of making service transactions more accurate, convenient and faster. Every company needs to think about how it might improve its services using SSTs, Sixth, excellent service companies know that positive employee attitudes will promote stronger customer loyalty. Service companies must attract the best employees they can find; they need to market a career rather than just a job. They must design a sound training program and provide support and rewards for good performance. They can use intranet, internal newsletter, daily reminders and employee roundtables to reinforce customer-centered  attitudes. It is important to audit employee job-satisfaction regularly. However, a company must be careful in training its employees to be friendly. In additional, good service companies should communicate their concerns about service quality to employees and provide performance feedback. Managing Service Productivity With the rising costs, service firms are under pressure to increase productivity. They can do so in several ways. First the company can hire and foster more skilful workers through better selection and training. Second the service firms can also increase the quantity of their service by giving up some quality, e.g. doctors working fro some HMOs have moved towards handling more patients and giving less time to each patient. Third Industrialize the Service by adding equipment and standardizing production. E.g. Macdonalds assembly-line approaches to fast food retailing, culminating in the technological hamburger. Fourth reduce or make obsolete the need for service by inventing a product solution. E.g. the wash-and-wear shirt reduced the need commercial laundries. Fifth the company can design a more effective service. E.g. The hiring of paralegal workers reduces the need for more expensive legal professionals. Sixth the company can present customers with incentives to substitute their own labor for company labor, E.g. banks have turned their customers into tellers Seventh the service provider can harness the power of technology. E.g. therapists can call up the information on hand-held computers, which pluck the data from a central computer. As a result, they can spend more time working directly with patients. However, companies must avoid pushing productivity so hard that quality is reduced. Some productivity steps help standardizes quality, increasing customer satisfaction but others might lead to over-standardization and can diminish customized service. Companies should also try to enhance the quality.

The Importance of Being on Time

Time is one of the utmost valuable entities that we have while we’re alive. We need time to develop our personal characteristics and talent, understanding relationships. Nothing becomes instantaneous, nor is it happenstance when it comes to understanding the importance of time.Everything in life requires time†¦from simply eating a meal to driving to a remote destination to developing a career. It is only thorough time that we are able to mature and develop wisdom through experiences we participate in as we move along our life’s journey. Time help us to set our priorities. Looking at the importance of time, we find that life is but a whisper—one day we are born, we grow up to experience an array of decision-making events (good and bad), and if we are fortunate to get to a ripe age, we leave this world—hopefully leaving a positive mark on society. In comparison to time, life goes by so fast. Time is one commodity that can be stored up and used for a lat er occasion—everyone has the exact amount of time in a day—24 hours.In fact, time is so essential that there never seems to be enough of it and we tend to believe that if we only had more time we would be able to accomplish great things, or something productive like a develop a relationship, accomplish a project or task, or even just rest for a longer period of time. On the contrary, some believe that they have too much time on their hands and have not discovered a true sense of using time wisely.While the management of time in terms of applying principles, skills tools and systems is essential from a military point of view, I’ve learned that the precision of time is extremely critical when it comes to collaborating operations in order to accomplish satisfactory results. Planning timed events not only does it save lives, but we learn to be an army in sequence and on one accord.Not only have I heard echoed as long as I can remember catch phrases like, ‘time is money’, ‘seize the moment’ or ‘time is of the essence’, but I’ve learned that the consumption of time that is wasted cannot be retrieved and that time must be appreciated. When time is not  cherished, causalities will develop in terms of seizing the perfect moment, taking advantage of the perfect scenario, or lost opportunities. Inappropriate use of time always affects others—it produces a domino effect. It’s gone forever.For centuries, time has left its mark in history and many fallen heroes have paid the ultimate sacrifice because of it. Timing has also allowed us to commemorate victory in liberating countries out of the bondage of hatred and despair.When time is taken more seriously, great accomplishments are made and outstanding memories grace the pages of history for all to know about. While none of us are perfect in any area of our lives, I’ve learned that we should get the most out of each day, and that we sho uld enjoy life to the fullest; which helps us to understand the importance of every moment. Time allows us to recognize triumph and failure†¦especially when it comes down to military strategies. Through a series of strategically planned and comprehensive precisely timed events, which included all components such as the time of day, natural elements, environmental surroundings, scheduled events, and a host of other supportive circumstances, the Allied Airborne Operations during Operation Overlord, otherwise recognized as D-Day, is noted to this day for its historical success.The landings were conducted in two phases and synchronized timing played a major role in this operation. The first landing of an airborne assault consisting of 24,000 British, American, Canadian and Free French airborne troops arrived shortly after midnight, and an amphibious landing of Allied infantry and armored military on the coast of France that started at 6:30 a.m. sharp. The surprise attack was achiev ed thanks to inclement weather and set of comprehensive deception plans implemented many months before the landings. One deception plan, Operation Bodyguard was intentionally launched to distract the German’s attention from the possibility of landings in Normandy.A key success was to convince Adolf Hitler that the landings would actually occur at another location. There were also decoy operations taking place simultaneously with the landings under the code names Operation Glimmer and Operation Taxable to distract the German forces from the real landing areas. These operations  were successful because of timing and operating as an army of one clearly defined goal. Operation Market-Garden on the other hand was considerably an unsuccessful Allied military operation, fought in the Netherlands and Germany in the Second World War.It was the largest airborne operation up to that time. While the beginning parts of the strategy plan were successful; the operation failed miserably be cause of lack of synchronized timing and delays, unforeseen circumstances and inadequate information which caused system breakdowns and total chaos near the end of the carefully strategized operation. The end resulted in severe negligence factors which left our military and allied forces trapped and vulnerable to enemy attacks, and unplanned resources had to be called in to evacuate and help support the initiative.If this operation had been successful, it would have shortened World War II by six months but instead a prolonged war became inevitable. From sunrise to sunset, timing affects everything that we do. Timing should be treated with the upmost respect; because once time is used up†¦it cannot be recovered again. Whether time is wasted, mismanaged or even used wisely, it always has a significant bearing on others. Time can either help or hinder others from their achievements and we must all learn to be considerate of using someone else’s time wisely. Each day, I have decided to be more intentional in planning, and I am not the same person I was a year ago.Within a year timespan I now value time because past experiences have taught me not to take it for granted.
